Crazy Quilt!
Remember when I though I had finished my first leader/ender blocks? Well, I then started a new leader/ender project - a Crazy Quilt! Here are the first three blocks!
I'm using the a foundation paper pieced method - until I started having to remove the paper. Even with the smaller stitch length it. was. not. fun. Ug.
Then I thought about using muslin....but not sure if muslin foundation blocks would play nice with my paper pieced blocks.
I found this method from Patchwork Posse on my Pinterest Quilting - Quilt Tutorials and Ideas.
Would any of you have advice to offer? I'm really loving these blocks and would like to settle on a method before I continue....
Thank you in advance!

I wouldn't advise using muslin, I only did that once at a class, the result was far too thick for joining blocks together. I have sone paper piecing although only odd bits. If it were a pattern I would say stitch over the lines without thread in the (old) needle so it is pre perforated but you can't do that. So, look at the paper you are using, it needs to be thin and cheap, the kind that tears easily and you wouldn't normally use. There is paper you can buy specially but it depends on if you want the extra cost. Years ago my local quilt shop was giving reward points and I used some of mine to buy a roll of Golden Threads, it is made for paper piecing and is removed fairly easily. I have had my roll a long time now, I don't use it often but it's great to have. Nowadays you can buy packs of sheets specially to use in the printer, I haven't used that before, I always draw out any designs on my Golden Threads. I hope find your best solution. Xx
ReplyDeleteOh oh! I'm using muslin for my RSC string blocks! :o I'll face that challenge when I have to I guess! :) Thank you so much for your input and advice! It is so appreciated!
DeleteWhat type of paper did you use? Carol Doak sells a newsprint that is easy to remove. I got mine from JoAnns. Amazon might sell it but I haven't looked. I know Carol sells it on her web site. Wait, Bonnie Hunter swears by telephone directory paper. Check to make sure the ink doesn't rub off and then cut to size. I've had success with it too. If you don't have luck with that you could look for a newsprint tablet at the Dollar Store or the like. You can use muslin or cheap, cheap fabric but I wouldn't suggest you use it with your paper pieced ones
ReplyDeleteI used the telephone directory paper. I so appreciate your comments and advice! Thank you so much!
DeleteCrazy quilting is on my bucket list. The closest I have ever come is making string blocks and I used muslin for that since I am too lazy to pull off the paper. For my last sewing bee quilt, someone sent me a paper pieced block, I hated pulling the paper off. My neighbor says that she sprays down the paper (with a water bottle), makes it easier to remove the paper.
ReplyDeleteSpraying down the paper may just work! Thank you!
DeleteCute blocks. They do make special paper piecing paper which is much thinner (and therefore much easier to remove at the end).
ReplyDeleteThank you Cheryl! I will be looking into that paper! Your advice is much appreciated!
